‘There was no ego when they got together,’ director Lil’ X says of ‘Same Girl’ clip.
It’s rare that two kings from the urban-music world are seen in a music video together — scheduling conflicts and egos usually keep them apart. But a couple of weeks ago in Atlanta, R. Kelly and Usher pulled it off by filming a clip for their duet “Same Girl.”
“There was no ego when they got together,” said Lil’ X, the video’s director. “They were playing basketball on lunch breaks, it was all good. No egos. No gangs. It’s all straight, it’s all good. Just the chemistry and good vibes. You’ll feel it off the screen.”

Ne-Yo Gets Crowd On Its Feet (And One Fan Back To Ground) At NYC Show
Posted on May 14, 2007 | Filed Under RnB Music News
Fabolous joins R&B crooner onstage for new collabo ‘Make Me Better.’
NEW YORK — Panties and roses thrown at their feet, the occasional fan who darts past security and makes it onstage: Performers generally keep entertaining audiences through it all. On Saturday, however, Ne-Yo was stopped in his tracks.
The man with the #1 album in the country, Because of You, was 15 minutes into his headlining show at Utopia’s Paradise Theater in the Bronx when he told his DJ to end the music. Somehow, a woman had made her way onto a structure above the stage and had scaled it almost to the top, about a 35-foot drop to the floor. During “When You’re Mad,” the third song in Ne-Yo’s set, security guards began to convene. Someone whispered into Ne-Yo’s ear, and the R&B star looked up. He then signaled his DJ to be silent and addressed the fan. Read more

A preliminary injunction hearing in Beyoncé’s copyright infringement suit did not take place Friday as scheduled and has been adjourned until May 14. Attorneys for the singer, who is being sued by the Royalty Network — the copyright owner of the Des’ree song “I’m Kissing You,” which Beyoncé reinterpreted with “Still in Love (Kissing You),” featured on her B’Day – Deluxe Edition — have until Monday (May 7) to file a response to the suit. Beyoncé’s camp and the Royalty Network came to an earlier agreement filed last month, which states that Columbia and Sony would “engage in no further distribution” of the album or video anthology until the injunction hearing takes place. …

Ne-Yo reflects on the current state of R&B
Posted on April 27, 2007 | Filed Under RnB Music News
As he sits in the back of an SUV ferrying him from one recording studio to the next, Ne-Yo reflects on the current state of R&B — and determines that the genre is suffering from serious malaise.
“People just forgot what it was supposed to be, what it was supposed to feel like, the essence of what it is,” he says forcefully. “It’s a vibe, it’s a feeling — it’s supposed to make you feel something, as opposed to, `Let me go eeh-eeh-eeh-eeh-eeh and put a beat behind it and see if people will dance to it.’ Come on man. There’s more to it than that.” Read more
Mya ‘Liberated’ On New Album
Posted on April 21, 2007 | Filed Under RnB Music News
In the last four years, R&B singer Mya replaced her entire management team, made a label switch and broke up with her boyfriend. So it’s no wonder the Washington, D.C. native titled her upcoming Motown debut “Liberation,” set for a June 26 release.
The album was originally due last fall but has been bumped from the schedule a number of times since. “Litigations, court, transitioning from label to label, teaching kids and building a studio, that takes a while,” the 27-year-old singer tells Billboard.com. “That’s why this album is a lot more aggressive, very honest, in your face and cut and dry.” Read more

Posted on April 14, 2007 | Filed Under RnB Music News
If you ask Mario the singer about Mario the actor, he’ll say he keeps his two professions completely separate — but the similarities just seem too hard to ignore.
After starring alongside Hilary Swank in “Freedom Writers” (see “Mario Sheds A Tear For ‘Freedom,’ Says He Wants To Direct”), Mario’s loaded his next LP, Go! — now due July 17 — with an equally star-studded lineup of producers and songwriters, including Timbaland, the Neptunes and Akon. Read more
